Vol 7, No 1 (2022): Aspects of Al-Si Alloys from a Scientific and Industrial Perspective

Authors:-Shikha Bhatacharya, Suman Bedi, Geetanjali Rawat

Abstract:-Aluminum alloy casting is a typical industrial procedure that is widely employed in the global automobile sector. This method encourages the production of a fine, homogeneous, and equiaxed grain structure. Understanding the mechanism of grain refinement is critical because a refined microstructure leads to improved uniform mechanical characteristics and reduced hot tearing propensity of the alloy by enhancing liquid metal feeding ability. A sufficient volume of liquid fraction during the last stage of solidification ensures reduced shrinkage porosity and finer second phase distribution. Finer grain structure is now accomplished in the casting industry by adding grain refiner to the melt. Al-Ti, Al-Ti-B, and Al-Ti-C master alloys are the most often utilised inoculants. Al-5Ti-1B is typically added to molten aluminium at a level of.01 to.05 by weight of titanium. After the addition of grain refiner, the number of active nucleation sites in the melt begin to scatter and nucleate solid particles during solidification. There are two mechanisms of grain refinement: I the Nucleant effect, which promotes appropriate locations for heterogeneous nucleation of grains, and (ii) the Solute effect, which limits grain development by solute element segregation. TiAl3 and TiB2 particles have been shown to be the most prevalent heterogeneous nucleation particles for aluminium crystals. Cooling rates in the form of constitutional undercooling provide the necessary driving power for grain refining during solidification. Many scholars have contributed significantly to understanding the mechanism of grain refining in melt. However, the precise methods by which grain refining happens utilising the grain refiner are yet unknown. The function of the titanium solute in creating a growth limitation effect, (b) the thermodynamics of Al-Ti-based alloy systems, and (c) the heterogeneous nuclei of TiAl3 and TiB2 particles have all been studied experimentally and theoretically. The current study provides a review of grain refinement research that take into account both industrial practise and scientific elements of grain refining. For the scientific and industrial communities, the research will be valuable in analysing the performance of grain refiners.

Authors:-Dr. R. Sathish Kumar, Vineeth Gupta

Abstract:- The plasma generating process in the fusion reactor takes place at extremely high temperatures in the Toroidal vessel. The greater temperature may cause harm to the reactor's internal components. After the procedure is done, the tokamak is inspected on a regular basis for maintenance. A millimetre leak is also not authorised in such studies. Such leaks cannot be discovered without a suitable method, which is tough for a human to perform. The maintenance procedure entails the replacement of broken parts, which necessitates operations such as welding, vacuum cleaning, screw bolting and unbolting, pick and position the blanket, and so on. The tokamak's components are all massive and hefty. Because of the large area and effort needed in the maintenance process, a team of robotic manipulators will conduct much of the maintenance work in the reactor.

In this research, a 5 DOF Articulated Arm that can perform the maintenance task of a Tokamak vacuum vessel has been created and its efficiency has been assessed under the two essential conditions of a static robot and Kinematics. Forces are estimated at each joint of the prototype of real-time manipulator application, and defined actuators are examined for the provided payload. As a result, the end effector's payload capacity is established. The recommended model has a maximum payload capacity of 1 kilogramme. The prototype is mostly for the pick and place application. The CAD model was produced with CATIA-3D modelling software, and it was used to construct and analyse the articulated arm. Software solutions are being used to validate the kinematic simulation and the MBD Analysis. The Motion view module of HyperWorks'12 programme is used for MBD analysis. Hypermesh is used for static structural analysis.

Abstract:-In today's world, the automobile industry is continually working toward the goal of producing lighter vehicles in order to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. It is essential to design cars with the appropriate weight in order to have the best possible performance. The automotive industry is now utilising topology optimization and alternative materials in an effort to lower overall vehicle body weight. This is being accomplished through the optimization of vehicle designs. However, the revised design needs to satisfy a number of performance requirements, the most important of which are its stiffness and strength. The purpose of this study is to suggest an ideal design for the brake pedal that is utilised in the three-wheeler market by employing several methods of analysis, including theoretical, numerical, experimental, and topological optimization. This study focuses on finding ways to reduce the weight of an existing brake pedal without changing the material that it is made of, therefore the material that is used for the brake pedal has not been altered. Reverse engineering was used in conjunction with computer-aided design (CAD) software to create a digital model of an existing brake pedal. The pedal in question was used in a vehicle. The linear static stress analysis and modal analysis will serve as the foundation for the finite element analysis and topology optimization that will be carried out with the help of the Altair Opti-Struct programme.  Author:  Samta Jain, Dr. Vikas Bansal, Pawan Kataria

Abstract: This paper presents static structural analysis of engine camshaft by FEA. The Camshaft is important parts in the IC engines. This camshaft rotates at high speeds causing stress and vibrations in the system. Camshafts are also subjected to varying contact fatigue loads due to the contact of the plunger on the cam. These exact values are needed to be determined to avoid failure in camshaft. The objective of the project is to perform stress analysis of camshaft. In this project the standard camshafts is modeled and analyzed using Pro-E Wildfire 4.0 and ANSYS WORKBENCH 11.0 software respectively. The model is created by the basic needs of an engine with the available background, such as forces acting over the cam by means of a valve while running at maximum speed. Here the approach becomes fully CAE based. CAE based approach enriches the Research and limits the time duration. A study has been undertaken to predict the structural behavior of camshafts of different materials using three dimensional finite element stresses. Four Materials namely aluminum, steel are taken into the consideration. The results of Stress and maximum displacement are calculated and compared for all the above materials. ANSYS values are compared with the theoretical values. The conclusion is to focus towards proper material for the camshaft to reduce maximum displacement and stress. The material steel comes out to be the best material for the manufacture of camshaft based on the analysis.

Abstract:-L.P machine consists of two main machines which are laser cutting and 3D printing combined in one machine, these all machines are very expensive in the market so instead of buying two machines we can buy only one machine with both functions and having high accuracy. In our project we have decided to develop working model of laser cutting and engraving machine. This machine is very useful in our department since it’s a kind of rapid prototyping machine. It can cut out paper patterns and thermoplastic sheets to produce desired shape and patterns. Till now we have collected information on laser cutting, laser and what engraving is. Laser cutting is different from laser engraving; in case of engraving very low intensity laser torch is used as compared to laser cutting. We got a brief introduction on laser, how it works, what are its properties, how to generate it and how to control its intensity. It might not cut through chunks of wood but surely burn the top layer. So combining both the machines in one we can make both the processes economical efficient and easy to use. This will also occupy less space and reduce men power required.

Abstract: In many casting manufacturing industry, Furnaces are most commonly used for melting of materials. Induction furnaces are more beneficial as no fuel is required. Especially silica ramming mass is used as refractory material to prevent losses. It is a problem to find life of Induction Melting Furnace wall under thermal fatigue. The induction melting furnace wall is made of silica ramming mass which is one kind of refractory material. In foundry industry, energy accounting is necessary to determine heat losses and how efficient is the energy management system. There are many opportunities for improving energy efficiency in most foundries. In this paper we have suggested alternative ramming mass material to silica ramming mass which is Zirconia (ZrO2).The thermal conductivity of Zirconia ramming mass is less so considerable energy saving can be achieved by proper attention to this process by thermal analysis of induction furnace by using ANSYS software. This paper deals with Thermal analysis of Induction furnace by using Silica and Zirconia ramming mass material for minimum heat losses during melting process. Heat loss calculation requires thermal properties and physical parameter. Calculations have been done for theoretical heat loss and temperature distribution which are later compared with actual values measured on existing furnace. ANSYS Software was used for thermal analysis which gave more accurate results.

Authors:-Priyal Lokhandkar, Dr. C. R. Patil

Abstract:-An automotive disc brake is a device which creates resistance to the motion of wheel under running conditions. The basic function of disc brake is to stop or slow down the motion of wheel by applying frictional force through caliper assembly. During this process kinetic energy converts in heat energy and dissipate into surrounding atmosphere. The conversion of energy results in speed retardation, and brings the vehicle in steady state. The heat dissipation properties during actuation have significant impact on the brake performance. During operation the high stresses are built up, results in wear and fading. The performance parameters can be improved by considering thermal characteristics of disc brake materials. The objective of this study is to investigate, under extreme working conditions, the thermochemical behavior of different brake rotors in order to evaluate their efficiency and stability, also to identify any compromising weakness on them. In this paper the investigation is done by considering different material used for brake disc manufacturing and the thermal behavior of the same in loading condition analysis of different shapes with different material of disc rotor.

Authors: Periyasamy Bernix. S, Pradeep. S , Raviprasaath.R, Dr. B. A. Saravanan

Abstract: CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic), which is composed of carbon fibers in a resin matrix, is an extremely strong and light composite material that has found use in the aerospace and automotive industries. CFRP boards are very difficult to machine using common machining processes. Various machining artifacts, such as burrs and delamination, occur frequently when machining CFRP. Adequate techniques for machining CFRP have not yet been established. Recently, electroplated diamond wire machining technology has found use in cutting hard, brittle materials such as silicon and sapphire. In this study, we used an electroplated diamond wire saw to cut a CFRP work piece. We quantified the cutting forces imposed on the work piece and observed the surface state of the work piece after cutting. We demonstrated that an electroplated diamond wire tool is suitable for the high-quality machining of CFRP boards.

Vol 3, No 1 (2018): Selection and Analysis of Spherical Plain Bearing

Author: Priyanka P. Gangurde

Abstract: Spherical plain bearings are used to accommodate shafts or rods with varying amount of misalignment. They are designed to manage high radial loads and to provide consistent performance under condition of extreme speed and critical stresses. One of the applications of this bearing is vehicle suspension. There is wide range of spherical plain bearing which can be used to withstand high alternating loads, shock loads and radial loads with unilateral load direction. In this seminar, the aim is to select proper type spherical plain bearing as a replacement to ball joint which is going to accommodate at the knuckle end of upper and lower arm of front suspension of QUAD BIKE and to carry out analysis of spherical plain bearing by using FEM method. It has been seen that there is better performance of spherical plain bearing than the ball joint and having wide range of load carrying capacity. The study consists of selection of bearing size which includes, 1) Load rating 2) Rating life 3) Specific bearing load 4) Temperature conditions and 5) Design of bearing arrangements. Load rating includes static as well as dynamic load rating. Dynamic load rating is used for calculations when the bearing is subjected to dynamic stress. Dynamic stresses occur when tilting, oscillatory or rotational movements are made under load, e.g. resulting from vibrations, or loads which are applied alternately at high frequency. Static load rating represents the load which is taken by bearing when static contact stress of bearing contact surface reaches the material stress limit and it remain stationary under load and it is considered when dynamically loaded bearings are subjected to heavy shock loads. For accounting the loads, lots of research and efforts have been done in this field to reduce mechanical failures and improved sustainability by using spherical plain bearing. Fatigue analysis is carried out on solid-Thinking Inspire 2018 and analytical modelling in CATIA V5.
