Flexible Manufacturing Systems: Automation for Agile Production

Authors: Dr. Rajeev Narayan, Ms. Neha Deshmukh

Abstract : Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) offer the potential to meet the increasing demand for mass customization, rapid production, and improved quality by enabling agility in manufacturing processes. Automation plays a vital role in enhancing the flexibility and responsiveness of these systems by integrating Computer Numerical Control (CNC), robotics, sensors, and real-time control systems. This paper explores the structure, components, levels of flexibility, and the transformative role of automation in FMS. Additionally, it examines real-world applications, benefits, and challenges associated with deploying FMS in modern industry. With advancements in AI and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), automated FMS are poised to become integral to Industry 4.0 environments. This paper aims to bridge the understanding between traditional manufacturing setups and adaptive smart factories empowered by flexible and automated solutions.
