Virtual Reflections: The Role of Digital Twin Technology in CAM and Smart Automation

Author: Dr. Rachit Verma

Abstrct: Digital Twin Technology (DTT) is redefining Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and the broader landscape of smart automation. By creating real-time digital replicas of physical assets, processes, and systems, DTT enables continuous monitoring, predictive analytics, and seamless integration of virtual and real environments. In the context of CAM, digital twins optimize tool paths, simulate machining operations, and improve part quality even before manufacturing begins. This paper explores the foundational principles, implementation strategies, and industrial applications of digital twin technology in CAM environments. It also discusses integration with IoT, AI, and cloud platforms that enhance decision-making and responsiveness. Challenges such as interoperability, cybersecurity, and high setup costs are analyzed. Finally, the paper outlines future trends that could revolutionize how digital twins interact with CAM systems for intelligent and autonomous production.
