Vol 1, No 2 (2023): The Forgotten Surgical Legacy of Ayurveda

Author:-Kalesh Sharma

Abstract:-The forgotten surgical legacy of Ayurveda, one of the world's oldest systems of medicine, represents a profound intersection of ancient wisdom and modern surgical innovation. While Ayurveda is celebrated for its holistic approach to wellness, its surgical heritage often remains obscured by its more prominent facets. This paper embarks on a comprehensive journey to illuminate Ayurvedic surgery, tracing its historical roots, fundamental principles, surgical techniques, and enduring influence on contemporary surgical practices.Ayurvedic surgery emerged in the rich tapestry of ancient Indian civilization, with its earliest references found in the Vedas. It evolved into a sophisticated discipline, as exemplified by the monumental Sushruta Samhita, which documented surgical knowledge more than two millennia ago.72The fundamental principles of Ayurvedic surgery, deeply rooted in a holistic worldview, encompass the Tridosha Theory, the Panchamahabhuta Concept, individualized treatment, and the recognition of the mind-body connection. These principles underpin the unique approach of Ayurvedic surgery, which seeks not only to treat ailments but also to restore the balance of the body, mind, and spirit.Ayurvedic surgeons developed a wide array of surgical techniques, including Shalya Tantra (surgical procedures), Kshara Sutra therapy, Agnikarma, Siravedha, and Marma Chikitsa. Notably, Sushruta's pioneering rhinoplasty technique and advancements in cataract surgery laid the foundation for modern plastic and ophthalmic surgery. The influence of Ayurvedic surgery extends to contemporary medicine, evident in its contributions to plastic and reconstructive surgery, aseptic techniques, herbal medicine, patient-centered care, and personalized medicine. Ayurvedic surgery's holistic patient approach resonates with modern concepts of holistic healthcare. In recognizing and preserving this forgotten surgical legacy, we honor the profound contributions of Ayurveda to the world of medicine, bridging the chasm between ancient wisdom and modern surgical practices. This exploration serves as a testament to the enduring quest for healing, which transcends time and tradition.
