Holistic Approaches in Kayachikitsa: Integrating Classical Principles with Modern Internal Medicine
Abstract
Kayachikitsa, the branch of Ayurveda dedicated to internal medicine, emphasizes a holistic approach to diagnosing and managing diseases by balancing body, mind, and consciousness. The classical Ayurvedic texts describe the human body as an intricate network of doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), dhatus (tissues), and malas (wastes), where disease arises from their imbalance. Modern medicine, on the other hand, focuses primarily on pathophysiology and symptomatic management. Recent research in integrative medicine shows that the principles of Kayachikitsa, such as personalized treatment, dietary modification, and Panchakarma therapy, can significantly enhance disease prevention and patient recovery. Scientific validation of traditional formulations like Triphala, Guduchi, and Ashwagandha through pharmacological and clinical studies has reinforced the global relevance of Ayurvedic internal medicine. This paper reviews the integration of classical Kayachikitsa principles with evidence-based biomedical practices, exploring their synergistic role in chronic disease management and lifestyle disorders.
