Abstract: The global chemical industry is undergoing a significant transformation driven by the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize dependence on fossil resources, and adopt circular manufacturing practices. Precision fermentation has emerged as a promising and versatile platform for the sustainable production of chemicals, fuels, and materials. Unlike traditional fermentation, precision fermentation employs genetically engineered microorganisms to produce specific target molecules with high selectivity and yield. This approach enables the conversion of renewable feedstocks such as sugars, agricultural residues, and even waste carbon into value-added chemicals under mild operating conditions. In recent years, advances in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and bioprocess optimization have expanded the scope of precision fermentation beyond pharmaceuticals and food ingredients into bulk and specialty chemicals. This review discusses the fundamental principles of precision fermentation, microbial host selection, metabolic pathway engineering, and downstream processing strategies. Emphasis is placed on its application in producing organic acids, alcohols, biopolymers, and platform chemicals relevant to sustainable chemical manufacturing. Economic, environmental, and scalability challenges are critically analyzed, along with emerging trends such as AI-assisted strain design and integration with renewable energy systems. Overall, precision fermentation represents a key enabling technology for achieving a low-carbon and resilient chemical industry.
