Abstract: The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has led to a tremendous increase in data generation, pushing traditional cloud-centric architectures beyond their limits. This paper investigates the strategic integration of edge computing within information technology (IT) frameworks as a means to support scalable and efficient IoT solutions. By relocating data processing closer to the source, edge computing significantly reduces latency, enhances real-time analytics, and improves bandwidth utilization. The paper outlines the architectural transformation brought by edge computing, reviews current implementations, discusses challenges and limitations, and proposes a comprehensive outlook for future developments. It emphasizes the vital role of edge computing in building responsive, secure, and context-aware IoT systems.
