Abstract: The rapid urbanization and need for sustainable development have given rise to the concept of smart cities, which leverage information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance urban services, improve efficiency, and foster innovation. A critical component of this transformation is the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) with urban information technology systems. This paper explores the theoretical foundations and practical implementations of IoT in smart cities, highlighting successful case studies from around the world. It discusses the significant challenges of data privacy, interoperability, infrastructure costs, and regulatory issues. Furthermore, the paper outlines the scope and opportunities presented by IoT integration in areas such as smart transportation, environmental monitoring, energy management, public safety, healthcare, and waste management. Technological innovations like 5G networks, edge computing, AI and ML, and blockchain are examined as enablers of smart city solutions. The future directions emphasize the importance of public-private partnerships, citizen engagement, sustainability, and scalability in realizing the full potential of smart cities.
