Abstract: The effect of soil structure interaction is generally ignored in the seismic analysis of the multistory buildings. In most of the cases fixed base assumption is accepted which in general not accurate. Soil flexibility causes lengthening of the natural periods due to overall decrease in stiffness as the lateral stiffness of the building depends on the compressibility of the soil. This leads lo a subsequent variation in the natural periods of the system which may considerably influence the seismic response of the building. Thus the effect of soil-structure interaction should be considered in buildings which are located in earthquake prone areas. Reinforced concrete frame buildings with unreinforced brick masonry infill walls are generally analyzed and designed as bare frames, without considering the strength and stiffness contributions of infills.
