Abstract

Background: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder leading to progressive thyroid enlargement and hypothyroidism. Patients with large goitres or compressive symptoms are often considered for thyroidectomy, which carries surgical risks. Non-invasive integrative therapies, including yoga and naturopathy, may offer symptomatic relief and influence surgical decision-making.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a combined yoga and naturopathy program in managing compressive symptoms of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and its potential role in deferring surgery.

Case Presentation: A 51-year-old female presented with anterior neck swelling, hoarseness, and elevated anti-thyroid antibodies. She underwent a seven-day inpatient integrative program comprising supervised yoga-based neck exercises, hydrotherapy with neutral throat packs, and a nutrient-rich anti-inflammatory diet including Nigella sativa, selenium, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. The patient continued the regimen at home for three months with periodic monitoring of symptoms, thyroid function, and autoantibody levels.

Results: The patient reported substantial reduction in neck swelling, resolution of dysphagia, and improvement in voice quality. Thyroid hormone levels remained stable, and anti-TPO and anti-TG titers showed a modest decrease. Symptomatic improvements were likely mediated by enhanced lymphatic and venous drainage, improved microcirculation, autonomic regulation, antioxidant effects, and immunomodulation. No adverse effects were observed, and the patient was able to safely defer surgical intervention.

Conclusion: Structured integrative therapy combining yoga, hydrotherapy, and dietary modulation may provide meaningful symptomatic relief and partial immunological improvement in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, potentially allowing selected patients to postpone surgery. Further controlled studies with larger cohorts and objective outcome measures are recommended to validate efficacy and long-term benefits.
