Abstract:Â This paper makes an attempt to give an overview of the role of rural women in Assam towards socio-economic development. The role of women is one of the key factors in achieving the millennium goals of development. This requires the active participation of women in social and economic activities. But this has not been possible practically as women are subjugated by prevalent social discriminations such as gender inequality, less access to education, domestic violence etc. In an attempt to improve the condition of rural women, the government has introduced many schemes. But the proper implementation of these schemes requires an overall change in the societal norms. But if Ngo s, Self-help groups help in creating awareness among the rural women about education, self-employment desired changes can be achieved.
