Abstract

ABSTRACT Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force across multiple industries, and the fields of architecture, urban planning, and built environments are no exception. Traditionally, the design and management of buildings and cities relied on manual processes, fragmented data systems, and limited predictive capabilities. However, the integration of AI throughout the lifecycle of built assets—from conceptual design to demolition—has begun to redefine workflows, efficiency, sustainability, and decision-making processes. This paper reviews the application of AI as a lifecycle tool in architecture and urban systems, highlighting its role in design optimization, generative modeling, construction automation, facility management, and smart city governance. The study synthesizes current literature and real-world implementations, including platforms such as Autodesk Revit, Google Earth Engine, and CityEngine, to illustrate AI’s evolving ecosystem. It also addresses the ethical, environmental, and social implications of AI deployment. While AI promises enhanced efficiency, cost savings, and data-driven precision, concerns around data privacy, bias, professional displacement, and over-automation remain significant. The findings suggest that AI should not replace architects and planners but act as an intelligent co-designer and decision-support system. AI-driven lifecycle integration fosters resilient, sustainable, and adaptive built environments when guided by responsible governance and interdisciplinary collaboration. The paper concludes with recommendations for education, policy frameworks, and future research directions to ensure inclusive and ethical AI adoption.
