Fare Collection Innovations Using Mobile Wallets and NFC

Authors: Dr. Meenakshi Sharma, Prof. Richa Verma

Abstract: The evolution of digital technology has significantly transformed fare collection systems in public transportation. Traditional paper-based and manual ticketing methods are gradually being replaced with contactless, efficient, and secure systems using mobile wallets and Near Field Communication (NFC). This paper explores the technological shift toward mobile and NFC-enabled fare collection systems, analyzing the benefits, implementation challenges, user adoption trends, and impact on operational efficiency. It also highlights successful global case studies and suggests a framework for cities and transportation agencies aiming to transition to smart fare systems. The analysis shows that integrating mobile wallets and NFC into fare collection systems not only improves user experience but also reduces costs, enhances data analytics, and ensures seamless transit connectivity.
