Abstract: Urbanization has accelerated significantly in the 21st century, placing immense pressure on transportation systems across the globe. Traditional transportation infrastructures have proven insufficient in addressing issues such as traffic congestion, air pollution, safety concerns, and inefficient resource allocation. Smart transport infrastructure, underpinned by Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), emerges as a transformative solution aimed at enhancing urban mobility, safety, and sustainability. This paper delves into the evolution, components, benefits, and challenges of ITS. It explores the role of integrated technologies such as sensors, AI, big data, and IoT in revolutionizing how cities manage traffic and mobility. Furthermore, the paper discusses the scope and future directions of smart transportation, emphasizing its necessity in achieving sustainable urban growth.
Keywords: Smart transport infrastructure, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), urban mobility, sustainable cities, traffic management
