Abstract: Urban transportation systems have increasingly contributed to global carbon emissions, leading to adverse environmental impacts and exacerbating climate change. As urban populations continue to grow, the demand for mobility rises, placing immense pressure on transportation infrastructure and resources. This paper explores sustainable transportation planning as a critical strategy for mitigating urban carbon footprints. Through a review of current literature, an analysis of key challenges, and an evaluation of practical solutions and innovations, this study highlights actionable approaches for city planners and policymakers. Strategies such as transit-oriented development, active transportation promotion, the adoption of electric vehicles, and integrated urban mobility systems are examined. Ultimately, this paper aims to provide a framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from urban transport while promoting accessibility, equity, and livability in cities.
