Application of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in Urban Traffic Management

Author: Prof. Abhishek Desai

Abstract: Urban traffic management has always been a critical issue for cities across the world. With the rapid rise in urban populations, vehicles, and infrastructure complexities, traditional methods of managing traffic flow have proven insufficient. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) offer modern, technology-driven solutions to optimize traffic management and reduce congestion, improve road safety, and enhance overall mobility. This paper explores the various components of ITS, their applications, and their impact on urban traffic management. By integrating real-time data, communication networks, and advanced algorithms, ITS provides a framework for smarter traffic control systems. The paper discusses several case studies from around the world that have successfully implemented ITS and highlights the challenges and opportunities in integrating these systems into urban settings. Finally, the future potential of ITS in sustainable urban mobility is examined, with recommendations for policymakers, city planners, and technologists.
