Abstract: Earthen embankments are widely used for roads, railways, river training works, canal works, dams etc. The economy and safety of these embankments can be accomplished by adopting proper methods of design, construction and maintenance. The failure of these structures is likely to result in huge loss of life and damage to property. It may also result in damage of the structure fully or partially. Geotechnical materials range from rock to clay. Their behavior is very complex. A full deformation analysis is the only viable approach for prediction of the nature of soils. The constitutive models that are used to characterize the behavior of geologic materials include linear elastic, nonlinear elastic, elastoplastic and elastoviscoplastic models. The development of constitutive models has assumed considerable importance in recent times due to the emergence of powerful numerical method. Finite element method is the most popular and widely used numerical method for solving engineering problems.
