Efficacy of Teekshna Kshara Bhavita Ksharasutra in Bhagandara (Fistula-in-Ano
Abstract
Fistula-in-ano (Bhagandara) is a common anorectal disorder characterized by an abnormal tract between the anal canal and perianal region. In Ayurveda, Kshara Sutra therapy is an established parasurgical procedure for its management. The present clinical study was conducted on 100 patients of fistula-in-ano to evaluate the efficacy of Teekshna Kshara Bhavita Kshara Sutra in comparison with the standard Apamarga Kshara Sutra. The patients were divided into two groups of 50 each. Group I (control) was treated with standard Kshara Sutra, while Group II (treated) received Teekshna Kshara Sutra.
Patients were assessed on various clinical parameters including the type of Bhagandara and Unit Cutting Time (UCT) in days/cm. The average UCT in the control group was found to be 6.6 days/cm, whereas in the treated group it was 5.0 days/cm, indicating relatively faster tract cutting and healing with Teekshna Kshara Sutra. The therapy was simple, safe, and suitable for outpatient management. Clinical symptoms such as pain and irritation were comparatively less in the treated group, and no recurrence was observed during follow-up.
The study concludes that Teekshna Kshara Bhavita Kshara Sutra is an effective option in the management of fistula-in-ano, showing slightly better results and reduced treatment duration compared to the standard Kshara Sutra.
