Testing the Mechanical Stability of Honeycomb Sandwiches with a Three-Point Bend

Authors: Rekha Rathore, Shalni Gupta

Abstract: Honeycomb sandwich constructions were created and evaluated in this work. Carbon fibre epoxy matrix composites were employed to make the facesheets of sandwich constructions, while Nomex® honeycomb was used as the core material. The composite facesheets were bonded to the honeycomb core using an epoxy-based adhesive film. Curing temperatures ranging from 100oC to 130oC were used, with curing periods ranging from 2h to 3h. A three-point bend test was carried out to study the mechanical performance of honeycomb sandwich constructions and, as a result, optimise the curing settings. It was discovered that a temperature of 110oC combined with a curing time of 2h provided the best mechanical performance with the least amount of damage in honeycomb core and facesheets.
