Additive Manufacturing & Advanced 3D Printing: Technologies, Materials, Applications and Future Scope
Abstract
ABSTRACT Additive Manufacturing (AM), commonly known as 3D printing, has emerged as one of the most disruptive manufacturing technologies in recent decades. Unlike traditional subtractive methods, AM builds objects layer by layer directly from digital models, enabling complex geometries, material efficiency and rapid prototyping. With advancements in printing techniques, materials, and software integration, modern 3D printing is now widely adopted in aerospace, automotive, healthcare, construction, and consumer products. This paper reviews the major additive manufacturing technologies, materials used, advantages, challenges, industrial applications and recent innovations. The study also discusses the integration of AM with Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing systems. Although AM offers flexibility and design freedom, issues like surface finish, production speed, and high initial cost still limits its mass adoption. Future developments in multi-material printing, bio-printing, and large-scale construction printing indicates a strong potential of this technology for sustainable and customized manufacturing.
