Abstract

ABSTRACT Microgrids are becoming an important solution for integrating renewable energy sources, improving reliability, and enabling localized power management. However, due to the intermittent nature of renewable generation and varying load demand, efficient control and energy management is required. Energy Management System (EMS) plays a vital role in monitoring, controlling, and optimizing the operation of microgrids. This paper presents a detailed review on microgrid control strategies and EMS architecture. Different control methods such as centralized, decentralized and hierarchical control are discussed. The paper also explains EMS functions like load scheduling, economic dispatch, demand response, and storage management. Challenges, recent advancements, and future scope in microgrid EMS are also highlighted. Tables and figures are included for better understanding of control hierarchy and EMS operations.
