Evaluation of Medhya Dravyas in Cognitive Enhancement: an Ayurvedic and Scientific Review

Abstract


Cognitive decline, neurodegenerative diseases, and age-related memory impairments pose massive socio-economic and healthcare challenges globally. Modern pharmacology relies primarily on single-target cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA receptor antagonists, which often come with significant systemic side effects and limited therapeutic disease-modifying capabilities. Conversely, the traditional Ayurvedic system of medicine provides a holistic, multi-targeted paradigm utilizing specialized neuroprotective herbs known as Medhya Dravyas. This review paper presents a comprehensive, systematic integration and critical evaluation of prominent Medhya Dravyas, specifically Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi), Centella asiatica (Mandukaparni), Convolvulus pluricaulis (Shankhapushpi), and Celastrus paniculatus (Jyotishmati), bridging traditional Ayurvedic epistemology with state-of-the-art pharmacological and molecular science. We evaluate traditional attributes such as Rasa (taste), Veerya (potency), and Prabhava (special action) alongside modern empirical data, encompassing mechanisms such as acetylcholinesterase inhibition, synaptic plasticity modulation, amyloid-beta aggregation suppression, neuroinflammation attenuation, and antioxidant cascade regulation. Methodologically, a rigorous review of literature across digitized Ayurvedic electronic repositories and modern databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar) spanning the last two decades was executed. The combined analysis reveals that the multi-targeted, synergistic active phytoconstituents within Medhya Dravyas—such as bacosides, asiaticosides, and alkaloid matrices— exhibit substantial scientific validation for memory retention, executive processing, and neuroprotection. This paper summarizes these dual dimensions, characterizes existing methodological research gaps, establishes the clinical significance of these herbs, and outlines future translational  trajectories for standardized phytomedicinal formulations in global cognitive healthcare.
