Smart Contracts: Definition, Working Mechanism, Lifecycle, and Applications in Decentralized Systems

Vishal Thakur, Manish Mehta, Sonia Singh

Abstract

Smart contracts are self-executing digital protocols deployed on blockchainnetworks that automatically enforce and execute predefined rules without theneed for intermediaries. Since their conceptualization by Nick Szabo, smartcontracts have evolved into a foundational component of blockchain ecosystems such as Ethereum, Hyperledger, and Solana. They enable automation, transparency, trustless execution, and immutability, which have transformed industries such as finance, healthcare, supply chain, and governance. Despite their advantages, smart contracts also introduce challenges such ascoding vulnerabilities, scalability constraints, and legal enforceability issues. This paper provides a comprehensive study of smart contracts, including their definition, architecture, working mechanism, lifecycle stages, securityconsiderations, and real-world applications. It also includes structured tables, conceptual diagrams, and academic references to provide an in-depth understanding of the subject. KEYWORDS: Smart Contracts, Blockchain, Ethereum, Decentralization,DApps, Automation, Solidity, Distributed Ledger
