Abstract

Ethereum is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables the development and execution of smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps). Since its launch in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and collaborators, Ethereum has become the most widely used smart contract ecosystem, supporting applications in decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), governance systems, and enterprise blockchain solutions. The Ethereum ecosystem consists of multiple layers including the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), consensus mechanisms, development frameworks, and testing environments. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the Ethereum smart contract development ecosystem, covering its architecture, programming environment, development tools, lifecycle, security challenges, and real-world applications. It also presents comparative tables, conceptual diagrams, and academic references to support a structured understanding of Ethereum’s technological landscape. KEYWORDS: Ethereum, Smart Contracts, Solidity, EVM, Blockchain, DApps,DeFi, Web3
