Comparative Analysis of Consensus Mechanisms: Proof of Work and Proof of Stake in Blockchain Networks
Abstract
Consensus mechanisms are the core components that maintain trust andintegrity in decentralized blockchain networks. Among the numerous consensus models developed over the last decade, Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS) have emerged as the two most influential and widely discussed approaches. Proof of Work relies on computational effort to validate transactions, while Proof of Stake depends on economic ownership and validator participation. This paper presents a detailed comparative analysis of PoW and PoS by examining their architecture, operational principles, advantages, limitations, security properties, energy consumption, and suitability for modern decentralized systems. The study further explores real world implementations and future developments of blockchain consensus protocols. The findings indicate that while PoW remains highly secure, PoS offers greater scalability and sustainability for next-generation blockchain applications.KEYWORDS: Blockchain, Consensus Mechanism, Proof of Work, Proof ofStake, Decentralization, Cryptocurrency, Security
