Abstract

Agad Tantra, an indispensable specialized branch among the Ashtanga Ayurveda (eight branches of Ayurveda), comprehensively deals with the systematic identification, clinical manifestation, and treatment parameters of toxicities arising from animate (Jangama) and inanimate (Sthavara) poison sources. Central to its therapeutic methodology is the deployment of Vishaghna Dravyas (anti-toxic formulations and herbs) possessing specialized pharmacodynamic attributes (Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, and Prabhava) that directly combat the fast-acting, lethal properties of Visha. This review evaluates the botanical specifications, historical classifications, and clinical outcomes of primary Vishaghna Dravyas, specifically Shirisha (Albizia lebbeck), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Neem (Azadirachta indica), and specialized mineral/polyherbal compounds like Bilvadi Agada. By examining both classical Ayurvedic references and contemporary pharmacological datasets, this paper highlights the mechanisms through which these herbs exert anti-ophidian, anti-inflammatory, free-radical scavenging, and systemic cytoprotective actions. While traditional observational accounts demonstrate high survival indices and therapeutic success in managing sub-lethal envenomation, insect bites, and cumulative environmental dermatological toxins, modern integration demands stringent standardization. The paper concludes by presenting a collaborative future model for Agad Tantra, utilizing reverse pharmacology, modern analytical bioassays, and strict regulatory validation to establish safe, complementary global protocols for toxin neutralization.
