Abstract

Agada Tantra, the specialized clinical discipline of toxicology within classical Ayurveda, provides an expansive and highly systematic framework for neutralizing a wide array of natural, mineral, and synthetic toxins. Central to this therapeutic matrix is the deployment of natural antidotes, known conceptually as Vishaghna Dravyas and Prativisha. These traditional antidotes are meticulously documented across the foundational text corpora of Ayurveda—namely the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya (the Brihattrayi). This review paper provides an in-depth academic analysis of the classification, pharmacological profiles, preparation methods, and clinical mechanisms of classical Ayurvedic antidotes. Traditional antidotes are grouped into single plant mono-herbal agents, animal-derived secretions, mineral adsorbing materials, and sophisticated multi botanical compound formulations such as Bilvadi Agada, Shirishadi Agada, and Dooshiivishaari Agada. The paper examines how these agents modulate the ten pathological attributes (Dashaguna) of poisons through mechanisms such as competitive receptor antagonism, chemical neutralization, biotransformation enhancement, and target organ shielding (Hridayavarana). Furthermore, this paper bridges classical hermeneutical models with modern pharmacology, exploring the potential of Ayurvedic antitoxins in addresses contemporary challenges like heavy metal toxicity, snake envenomation, and chronic environmental poisoning. This review highlights the critical role of these traditional formulations in providing scalable and integrative solutions for contemporary global toxicology.
