SwiftUI vs UIKit: Comparative Performance & Developer Productivity

Abstract: The iOS development ecosystem has evolved significantly over the past decade, with Apple providing multiple frameworks for building user interfaces. UIKit, introduced in 2008, has been the foundation of iOS app development for over a decade, providing mature and robust tools for interface creation. In 2019, Apple introduced SwiftUI, a declarative framework designed to simplify UI development while promoting code reusability and modern development practices. This paper provides a comparative review of SwiftUI and UIKit, focusing on performance metrics, developer productivity, learning curve, scalability, and ecosystem compatibility. Benchmarks and case studies are used to evaluate rendering efficiency, memory usage, and speed of UI updates. Additionally, developer surveys and productivity analyses provide insights into how each framework impacts coding efficiency and project timelines. Results indicate that SwiftUI offers faster development cycles and more concise code but may face limitations in complex or legacy project integration, whereas UIKit continues to offer unmatched performance control and backward compatibility. Recommendations are provided for framework selection based on project scope, team expertise, and performance requirements.
