Antimicrobial Stewardship in Community Nursing: Reducing Inappropriate Antibiotic Use for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

Dr. Ananya Rajesh, Mr. Rohit Mehra

Abstract

Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are one of the most common reasons for seeking healthcare, especially in community settings. Despite being mostly viral in origin, antibiotics are frequently prescribed inappropriately, leading to increased antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Community nurses play a pivotal role in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), promoting rational antibiotic use, patient education, and early identification of bacterial infections. This paper explores the role of community nursing in AMS, identifies challenges in implementation, and proposes strategies to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use for URTIs. The integration of education, clinical decision-making support, and multidisciplinary collaboration are highlighted as essential components of effective stewardship programs.
