ABSTRACT

The rapid development of deepfake technology has transformed the digital landscape, presenting both opportunities and significant threats to digital identity trust. Deepfakes—AI-generated synthetic media—can manipulate images, videos, and voices, creating highly realistic yet entirely fabricated content. This review paper explores the impact of deepfakes on digital identity trust, examining their technical foundations, detection methodologies, ethical concerns, and implications for personal, corporate, and governmental security. Furthermore, it evaluates emerging strategies to enhance trust in digital interactions, including blockchain-based identity verification, AI-driven detection, and regulatory measures. By integrating technological, psychological, and policy perspectives, this paper provides a comprehensive understanding of how deepfakes challenge the reliability of digital identities and proposes pathways to mitigate associated risks.
