RISC-V and Open Source Hardware in Industrial Controllers
Abstract
The rise of open-source hardware and RISC-V architecture has opened new possibilities for industrial controllers, offering customizable, cost-effective, and high-performance alternatives to proprietary solutions. RISC-V, a free and open instruction set architecture (ISA), provides flexibility for industrial applications, enabling fine-tuning for real-time control, energy efficiency, and embedded systems. This paper explores the adoption of RISC-V and opensource hardware in industrial controllers, examining the advantages, implementation challenges, ecosystem support, and case studies. Additionally, it compares RISC-V with traditional microcontroller architectures such as ARM and x86. The paper concludes that RISC-V combined with open-source hardware can significantly enhance innovation in industrial automation while reducing costs and vendor lock-in.
