Cybersecurity Enhancements in Embedded Electrical Systems for Automated Infrastructures

Vishal Rao, Sunita Sharma, Prakash Jha

Abstract

With the rapid adoption of embedded automation in critical infrastructures, cybersecurity has emerged as a paramount concern. This paper investigates the vulnerabilities and countermeasures associated with embedded electrical systems deployed in automated domains such as power grids, transportation, and manufacturing. Embedded systems, while enabling efficiency, expose infrastructures to risks including malware attacks, denial-of-service (DoS) assaults, and data manipulation. The research evaluates current embedded cryptographic techniques, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and hardwarebased trusted platforms for securing real-time automated systems. Case studies illustrate cyber incidents where inadequate security in embedded devices led to large-scale disruptions. Additionally, the paper emphasizes designing lightweight encryption protocols and secure boot mechanisms tailored for resource-constrained embedded systems. By incorporating multilayered defense strategies, embedded systems can safeguard both operational reliability and user data privacy in automated environments.
