Strengthening Patient Safety: Role of Nurses in Infection Prevention and Control in Hospital Settings

Priyanka Sharma, Rahul Deshmukh

Abstract

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is a fundamental component of patient safety and quality healthcare delivery in hospital settings. Nurses play a pivotal role in implementing IPC practices, as they are directly involved in patient care and clinical procedures. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) remain a major challenge globally, contributing to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This paper examines the critical role of nurses in infection prevention and control through evidence-based practices such as hand hygiene, sterilization, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), waste management, and patient education. The study highlights that effective nursing interventions significantly reduce infection rates and improve patient outcomes. The integration of structured IPC protocols, continuous training, and adherence to guidelines is essential for ensuring safe hospital environments.
