Equity-Focused Nursing Interventions to Reduce Disparities in Maternal and Newborn Outcomes: An Inclusive Approach to Improving Global Health Equity and Quality Care
Abstract
Maternal and newborn health outcomes remain key indicators of a country’s overall health system performance and social equity. Despite remarkable global progress in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, vast disparities persist across different socioeconomic, ethnic, and geographic groups. Nursing professionals, as the largest group of healthcare providers, play a vital role in mitigating these inequities through culturally competent, evidence-based, and community-oriented interventions. This paper explores the concept of equity-focused nursing interventions designed to reduce disparities in maternal and newborn health outcomes. It highlights strategies such as culturally sensitive care models, community engagement, health education, and policy advocacy. The discussion underscores the importance of structural and systemic changes, integration of social determinants of health, and interprofessional collaboration. Ultimately, this paper calls for the empowerment of nurses to act as advocates for equity in maternal and newborn health across all care settings.
