Interprofessional Collaboration in Managing Musculoskeletal Conditions

Authors  : Kirti Saxena , Rakesh Tiwari

Abstract : The management of musculoskeletal conditions often requires a multidisciplinary approach to address the complex physical, psychological, and functional needs of patients. Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) brings together professionals from physiotherapy, orthopedics, occupational therapy, pain management, and nursing to ensure comprehensive care. This collaborative model enhances diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and rehabilitation outcomes by promoting shared decision-making and role clarity among team members. Effective communication, mutual respect, and coordinated care pathways contribute significantly to patient satisfaction, faster recovery, and reduced healthcare costs. However, challenges such as hierarchical barriers, limited interprofessional education, and lack of structured communication channels can hinder optimal collaboration. This paper emphasizes the importance of IPC in improving patient outcomes and highlights strategies to strengthen collaborative practices in both acute and chronic musculoskeletal care settings.
