Ethical Challenges in Autonomous Systems: A Review

Abstract


ABSTRACT Autonomous systems, capable of perceiving their environment and acting with limited human intervention, are increasingly deployed across transport, industry, healthcare and other domains, raising significant ethical challenges. This review synthesises current understanding of the ethical challenges posed by autonomous systems. It examines the principal concerns, including accountability and liability, transparency and explainability, fairness and bias, safety and reliability, and privacy, and reviews the principles and approaches proposed to address them. The literature indicates that the autonomy and complexity of these systems create distinctive ethical challenges, particularly regarding who is responsible for their decisions, how those decisions can be understood and trusted, and how fairness, safety and privacy can be ensured, and that addressing these requires a combination of technical, ethical and governance measures. The review emphasises the importance of responsible design, transparency and human oversight. It concludes that ethical challenges are central to the responsible development of autonomous systems, and highlights the need for continued interdisciplinary research and effective governance.
