Integrating Grammar and Vocabulary through Communicative Teaching: A Systematic Review of Scaffolding Matrices, Lexical Infusion, and Cognitive Efficacy Profiles
Abstract
Fostering genuine communicative competence within contemporarysecond-language classrooms demands a definitive evolution away from traditional, fragmented instructional paradigms that treat syntax and lexicon as separate, isolated tracks. This systematic review paper synthesizes global peer-reviewed literature evaluating the operationalization, cognitive mechanisms, and institutional impacts of integrating grammar and vocabulary through Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Drawing upon Sweller's Cognitive Load Theory, Lewis’s Lexical Approach, and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), the analysis deconstructs how systematically weaving grammatical structures and lexical resources into authentic, task-based contexts optimizes working memory load and schema construction. The review examines specific operational styles—contrasting passive, deductive drilling with highly scaffolded interaction loops and tiered communicative activities. Concurrently, the paper critically diagnoses persistent structural obstacles that generate noticeable field friction, such as high teacher collaborative burdens under rigid pacing templates, assessment rigidity inside standardized test tracking pipelines, and severe professional capacity gaps. The empirical findings demonstrate that well-scaffolded, integrated communicative architectures generate statistically significant improvements in syntactic accuracy, lexical diversity, and conversational fluency, while markedly reducing rote dependency. Finally, this review highlights critical research gaps concerning digital asynchronous co-tracking networks and introduces a multi-layered curriculum mapping matrix designed to support sustainable, equitable educational governance.
