Teaching Children with Hearing Impairment: A Systematic Review of Differentiated Pedagogies, Assistive Technologies, and Curricular Scaffolding Models
Abstract
Fostering academic equity for children with hearing impairment demands aradical shift from standard, auditory-centric instruction toward multi-sensory, differentiated pedagogical architectures. This review paper presents a comprehensive systematic synthesis of global academic literature evaluating the operationalization of inclusive models for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) learners. Drawing on cognitive load theory, bilingual-bicultural paradigms, and neurocognitive plasticity, the analysis investigates how structured sensory modifications alter student comprehension, speech perception, and social-emotional integration. The review critically deconstructs the implementation of assistive technologies—specifically Frequency Modulation (FM) loops, loop induction systems, real-time captioning software, and speech-to-text decoders—evaluating their precise operational effect sizes on student learning outcomes. Concurrently, the paper diagnoses persistent institutional and instructional barriers, including severe teacher professional capability gaps, acoustically hostile classroom environments, and rigid curriculum pacing requirements that hinder authentic inclusion. The empirical findings reveal that multi-sensory visual scaffolding models significantly maximize student data processing while decreasing cognitive fatigue. Finally, this review highlights critical research gaps concerning digital virtual-signing interfaces and outlines an optimized, scaffolded educational framework to foster sustainable educational governance.
