STEM and STEAM Curriculum Approaches: A Systematic Review of Transdisciplinary Integration, Cognitive Outcomes, and Curricular Implementation Challenges

Abstract


The transition from isolated disciplinary silos to integrated transdisciplinarylearning models represents a cornerstone of contemporary educational reform, intended to prepare students for the complexities of a technology-driven global economy. This review paper provides a comprehensive synthesis of academic literature evaluating the operationalization of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and STEAM (which explicitly incorporates the Arts) curriculum approaches. Drawing on constructivist learning theory and modern cognitive science, this paper critically examines how cross-disciplinary instructional frameworks alter student problem-solving capacities, spatial reasoning, creative divergence, and design thinking. The analysis investigates various degrees of curriculum integration—ranging from multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary tracks to completely transdisciplinary paradigms—evaluating their specific operational impacts on student academic performance and affective engagement. Concurrently, the review identifies persistent institutional, systemic, and pedagogical barriers that inhibit wide-scale implementation, such as compartmentalized school administrative structures, rigid standardized accountability metrics, and significant gaps in pre-service and in-service teacher preparation. The synthesis demonstrates that while STEM models excel at developing convergent, analytical reasoning, STEAM approaches provide critical scaffolds for creative ideation, spatial adaptability, and equity-focused engagement. Finally, this paper maps out research gaps regarding digital transdisciplinary tools and proposes a unified, scaffolded implementation framework to optimize integrated education.  KEYWORDS: STEM Integration, STEAM Education, TransdisciplinaryPedagogy, Design Thinking, Creative Divergence, Educational Innovation.
