Vol 1, No 2 (2023): Midwifery-Led Care and its Impact on Maternal and Infant Health Outcomes
Authors:-Manoj Kachhawa, Devesh Singh Pawar
Abstract:-Midwifery-led care is an innovative and patient-centered approach to maternity care that has gained recognition for its potential to positively influence both maternal and infant health outcomes. Rooted in the belief that childbirth is a natural, healthy process, midwifery-led care emphasizes holistic, evidence-based, and personalized support throughout the childbirth journey. This paper explores the philosophy, principles, and practices of midwifery-led care and its profound impact on maternal and infant health. The key principles of midwifery-led care include holistic care, informed decision-making, a focus on the normalcy of childbirth, continuity of care, empowerment, and cultural competency. These principles empower expectant mothers to actively participate in their healthcare decisions, reduce unnecessary medical interventions, and enhance their emotional and psychological well-being. The impact of midwifery-led care on maternal health includes reduced intervention rates, higher satisfaction levels, improved emotional well-being, and lower maternal mortality. This model of care also positively affects infant health by reducing preterm births, enhancing Apgar scores, promoting skin-to-skin contact, and supporting breastfeeding. However, challenges such as regulatory issues, interprofessional collaboration, and public awareness hinder the integration of midwifery-led care into the broader healthcare system. Overcoming these challenges and advocating for policy reform are essential for the continued development of this model. As we look to the future, midwifery-led care has the potential to revolutionize the childbirth experience, promote better health outcomes, and ensure that all women receive compassionate, holistic, and personalized maternity care.
