Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI): Methods, Applications and Challenges in Modern AI Systems
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are now widely used in different fields such as healthcare, finance, autonomous vehicles and smart city infrastructure. Many of these systems are built using complex machine learning models such as deep neural networks. Although these models achieve very high accuracy, they are often considered as “black box” models because their decision making process is difficult to understand by humans. This lack of transparency creates issues related to trust, reliability and accountability. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is an emerging research area which focuses on making AI systems more transparent and interpretable.
XAI techniques help users understand how and why a model produces a particular prediction. This is very important in sensitive domains where decisions can affect human life or financial stability. Various techniques such as feature importance analysis, rule extraction, model visualization and surrogate models are commonly used to explain complex machine learning models. Researchers are also developing new frameworks that combine interpretability with high predictive performance.
This paper presents an overview of Explainable Artificial Intelligence including its concepts, techniques, applications and challenges. It also discusses the importance of XAI in building trustworthy AI systems. In addition, several recent developments and research directions are summarized. The study shows that XAI plays a key role in responsible AI development and helps bridge the gap between complex algorithms and human understanding.
