An Evaluation of Stanya Dushti (Vitiated Breast Milk) and its Impact on Infant Digestive Disorders
Abstract
In pediatric healthcare, exclusive breastfeeding is recognized as the gold standard for promoting neonatal immunity, structural growth, and metabolic stability. However, the quality of breast milk is highly dynamic and sensitive to maternal imbalances. Ayurveda describes this phenomenon through the clinical framework of Stanya Dushti (vitiation of breast milk). This condition occurs when maternal dietary errors (Ahara-Vihara) and psychological stress alter the maternal Tridosha, which travel via the Stanyavaha Srotas to corrupt the composition of breast milk. Because an infant's digestive system (Koshtha) is fragile and dominated by Aparipakwa Agni (immature digestive fire), consuming vitiated breast milk directly triggers acute and chronic gastrointestinal disorders, such as infantile colic (Parigarbhika / Ajirna), gaseous distension, green frothy diarrhea (Atisara), and malnutrition (Phulla / Ksheerabhlasa). This review paper evaluates the clinical typologies of the eight distinct forms of Stanya Dushti, links their traditional physical profiles to modern milk biochemical alterations (including lactose-to-protein ratio shifts and inflammatory cytokine presence), and analyzes the dual-treatment model. This model coordinates maternal detoxification (Stanya Shodhana) with gentle infant metabolic supports (Samana), providing a safe, evidence-based strategy for managing pediatric digestive issues at their source.
