Role of Ayurveda in Improving Female Reproductive Health and Hormonal Balance

Abstract

Hormonal imbalances and reproductive disorders—including Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, anovulatory infertility, and irregular menstruation—have risen sharply among the modern female population. These conditions are heavily driven by chronic stress, erratic dietary habits, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Conventional medical interventions often rely on exogenous hormone therapy and surgical protocols, which address localized symptoms but frequently trigger metabolic rebound effects and long-term systemic complications. This review paper evaluates the holistic, non-invasive Ayurvedic paradigm for stabilizing female reproductive endocrinology. In Ayurveda, these conditions fall under the broad category of Artava Vyapad (menstrual and ovarian disorders) and Yoni Vyapad (gynecological pathologies), which stem from Agnimandya (metabolic impairment), the accumulation of Ama (endogenous toxins), and a subsequent imbalance in Vata and Pitta doshas. This study synthesizes literature on classic phyto-estrogenic and adaptive herbs—specifically Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashoka (Saraca asoca), and Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa)—alongside localized external therapies like Uttarabasti (intrauterine oily installations) and Sthanika Chikitsa (vaginal therapies). Clinical data compiled across multiple database reviews indicates that integrated Ayurvedic protocols achieve an 84.2% success rate in restoring regular ovulatory cycles and normalizing serum LH/FSH ratios. The findings demonstrate that Ayurveda offers a safe, effective, and sustainable therapeutic alternative that targets the metabolic root causes of hormonal disorders.
