Ayurvedic Management of Recurrent Respiratory Tract Infections in Children: A Clinical Perspective
Abstract
Recurrent Respiratory Tract Infections (RRTIs) present a substantial challenge in pediatric healthcare, leading to frequent school absenteeism, parental anxiety, and the overprescription of antibiotics. In contemporary medical practice, management is primarily symptomatic and supportive, occasionally escalating to surgical interventions such as adenoidectomy or long-term prophylaxis, which carry risks of systemic side effects and antimicrobial resistance. This paper explores the clinical perspective of Ayurvedic management for pediatric RRTIs, viewing them through the pathophysiological lens of Pranavaha Srotas Dusti, Mandagni, and Bala Kshaya. Ayurveda provides a comprehensive, multi-tiered approach focusing on Shodhana (gentle purification), Shamana (palliative therapies), and Rasayana (immunomodulatory rejuvenation). This review-based clinical analysis synthesizes classical Ayurvedic doctrines with contemporary clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of formulation groups like Agastya Haritaki Avaleha, Sitopaladi Churna, and single immunomodulatory herbs such as Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica), and Pippali (Piper longum). Clinical outcomes indicate a marked reduction in the frequency, severity, and duration of upper and lower respiratory episodes, alongside a notable recovery in the baseline pediatric immune apparatus. This clinical perspective establishes a structured framework for safe, cost-effective, and holistic pediatric respiratory care, successfully bridging traditional epistemologies with contemporary evidence-based pediatrics.
