Mechanical Property Enhancement of Epoxy Polymer Composites Reinforced with Carbon Nanotubes

Ramesh Chandra, Lavanya Reddy

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes possess exceptional mechanical properties, and theirincorporation into polymer matrices offers a route to lightweight compositesof enhanced strength and stiffness for engineering applications. This paperinvestigates the enhancement of the mechanical properties of an epoxypolymer composite reinforced with carbon nanotubes. Composites wereprepared with carbon nanotubes dispersed in the epoxy at several loadings, and their tensile strength, modulus, and elongation were measured. Theresults show that the addition of carbon nanotubes increased the tensilestrength and modulus up to an optimum loading, beyond which the properties declined owing to the agglomeration of the nanotubes, while the elongation decreased steadily with loading. The enhancement is attributed to the high stiffness and strength of the well-dispersed nanotubes and the transfer of load from the matrix to them, and the decline beyond the optimum to agglomeration that introduces defects. The study demonstrates that an optimal loading of carbon nanotubes significantly enhances the mechanical properties of the epoxy composite, illustrating an engineering application of nanotechnology in structural materials. KEYWORDS: Carbon Nanotubes, Polymer Composite, Epoxy, TensileStrength, Nanocomposite, Mechanical Properties, Reinforcemen
