Integration of 5G/6G Communication with Edge Intelligence
Abstract
With the rapid evolution of communication networks, 5G and the upcoming 6G have brought tremendous changes in connectivity capability. However, traditional centralized processing struggles to meet the increasing demands for ultra-low latency, real-time intelligence, and efficient resource allocation. Edge Intelligence (EI), which combines edge computing and artificial intelligence (AI), is emerging as a key enabler to solve these challenges in modern wireless systems. This review explores the integration of 5G/6G networks with edge intelligence, examining current advancements, architectural designs, challenges, and future research trends. We discuss how EI complements 5G/6G capabilities, improve Quality of Service (QoS), enhance resource allocation, and support intelligent network functions. This paper also reviews important EI techniques; key use cases such as autonomous vehicles and smart manufacturing, and proposes future directions. The objective is to give researchers and practitioners a clear perspective on how edge intelligence can unlock the true potential of next-generation communication.
