Homoeopathic Therapeutics in ENT and Ophthalmic Surgical Conditions: Adjunctive Role, Scope, and Limitations
Abstract
Conditions of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) and of the eye range from minor, self-limiting complaints to serious disorders that require surgery or urgent specialist care. This paper reviews the role of homoeopathic therapeutics in ENT and ophthalmic conditions, defining its appropriate scope, its adjunctive function alongside conventional care, and its limitations. A review-based methodology is adopted, drawing on the homoeopathic materia medica and clinical literature and on standard ENT and ophthalmology references. The analysis indicates that, within homoeopathic practice, medicines are used chiefly for acute and functional conditions such as uncomplicated upper-respiratory inflammation, acute rhinitis, mild conjunctivitis, and styes, and as adjunctive or supportive measures alongside conventional treatment. A structured framework is presented comprising a scope-and-boundary model, a clinical triage pathway, and a set of red-flag criteria for specialist and surgical referral. The study emphasises strongly that homoeopathy is not a substitute for surgery, antibiotics where indicated, or emergency care, and that conditions presenting red-flag features, such as sudden visual loss, uncontrolled bleeding, a suspicious mass, or spreading infection, require prompt conventional management without delay. It is further noted that the clinical evidence for homoeopathy in these conditions is limited and contested, and that authoritative reviews have not found convincing evidence of efficacy. The paper concludes that any role for homoeopathic therapeutics in ENT and ophthalmic care must be confined to acute and functional complaints and to adjunctive support, operate within clear referral safeguards, and never delay necessary surgical or specialist intervention.
