Role of Agad Tantra in the Management of Snakebite in Rural India
Abstract
ABSTRACT: Snakebite remains a pressing public health emergency in rural India, with thousands of lives lost each year due to delayed medical access and limited availability of antivenom. Agad Tantra, the branch of Ayurveda that deals with poisons and toxins, holds a time-tested framework for the management of envenomation using indigenous knowledge, herbal antidotes, and procedural care. This paper explores how Agad Tantra offers an integrative approach in treating snakebites, especially in settings with constrained infrastructure. Drawing from historical texts, field-based clinical practices, and ethnobotanical insights, the discussion highlights the importance of traditional first-aid interventions, polyherbal formulations, and local triage methods. The paper also addresses challenges such as lack of standardization, regulatory barriers, and the need for cooperation between Ayurvedic and allopathic systems. With strengthened research, training, and regulatory support, Agad Tantra can be a valuable component of snakebite mitigation strategies in India’s rural regions.
