Abstract

Conflict is an unavoidable element of healthcare organizations due to high-pressure environments, multidisciplinary interactions, limited resources, emotional stress, and diverse professional expectations. Within nursing systems, unresolved conflict can reduce staff morale, impair communication, increase turnover, and compromise patient safety. Nurse leaders play a pivotal role in identifying, managing, and transforming workplace conflict into opportunities for collaboration and organizational learning. Effective conflict resolution skills are therefore essential competencies for nurse managers, head nurses, educators, and clinical supervisors.

This paper explores the concept of conflict resolution in nursing leadership, types and causes of workplace conflict, major theoretical models, leadership competencies required for conflict management, and practical strategies for nurse leaders. It further examines the impact of constructive conflict management on patient outcomes, employee retention, and organizational culture. The paper highlights communication, emotional intelligence, negotiation, mediation, and ethical decision-making as core skills for nurse leaders. Recommendations for integrating conflict resolution training into nursing education and continuing professional development are also presented.
