Policy Advocacy and The Expanding Leadership Role of Advanced Practice Nurses in Shaping Health Systems and Professional Autonomy

Abstract

Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) have transitioned from clinically focused roles to influential positions that intersect leadership, policymaking, and advocacy. As healthcare demands evolve due to population needs, policy reforms, and interprofessional collaboration, the leadership contributions of APNs are increasingly recognized. This paper explores the expanding leadership role of APNs, emphasizing their active involvement in policy advocacy at institutional, regional, national, and global levels. The discussion identifies core leadership domains, examines existing research, highlights systemic challenges, and outlines opportunities for strengthening the policy voice of APNs. It further analyzes how advocacy for legislative change, health equity, and professional autonomy has become integral to the advanced nursing role.
